Citizens Who Care Annual Winter Concert
It's Delovely!
The Great Songs of Cole Porter
Was performed on February 23 and 24, 2008
Veterans' Memorial Theater, 203 E 14th Street, Davis
A contemporary of George Gershwin, Richard Rogers and Jerome Kern, Porter's urbane wit and musical complexity won him the affection of the nation. Songs such as "What Is This Thing Called Love," "I Get A Kick Out of You," "It Was Just One of Those Things," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "It's Delovely," became instant hits and have remained classics. While his name was associated with many upbeat show tunes, a more serious side could be seen in such wonderful songs as "I Love Paris," and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye."
It used to be said that Cole Porter's songs sang for a smart set that the average American knew about only from hearsay, and that therefore, it was surprising that they struck the large public's fancy. But the truth is that Cole Porter sang for everyone. The sophistication in his lyrics represented a point of view many of us wished to achieve. His tunes, in the last analysis, had a universal touch.
In addition to the songs mentioned above, this year's concert included "Let's Do It," "You Do Something to Me," "Easy to Love," "Get Out of Town," "In the Still of the Night," "Friendship," "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," "Don't Fence Me In," "Always True to You in My Fashion," "Why Can't You Behave?," "It's All Right With Me," and "True Love," among others.
Tickets for next years concert will go on sale December 1, 2008.
