The Grace Award is named both for the first recipient, Grace Hiddleson, and for the virtues of grace exemplified by The Three Graces in western mythology that inspired qualities such as Excellence, Service to another, Charity, Mercy, Love, Gentleness, or Friendship.
Grace received the award in 2004. In 2005 the award was presented to Kay Krieger for her outstanding volunteer efforts, and in 2007 it was presented to Mary Velinsky
Citizens Who Care honors and celebrates our many volunteers who contribute to improving the quality of life for our elderly and frail community members at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. This year Volunteers, Board members, staff, donors and friends of Citizens Who Care gathered on October 7 at the Stonegate Club for a dinner to honor CWCs wonderful volunteers. CWC's In-Home Respite, Convalescent Home Visiting and Time Off for Caregiver programs are all made possible by the over 110 volunteers who provide these services countywide.
The 2007 Grace Award was presented to Petra Dauer. She is the this year's volunteer whose efforts best exemplify the values and spirit that underlie CWC's work.
Petra was recognized for her extensive volunteer work since 2005, devoting more than 350 hours of service as a volunteer for Citizens Who Care's In-Home Respite program in Woodland and its Time Off program in Davis.
Petra is originally from Germany and speaks fluent German. This skill made it possible for her to befriend another German native who resides at St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland. While the 95 year-old German used to speak English, she is able to converse only in German these days.
"It is such a pleasure to speak our native language and be understood," Petra said. "I love visiting Liesel and I'm honored to have received this award."
On behalf of CWC's clients, volunteers and staff, we honor Petra for her dedicated and outstanding work to brighten the days of isolated elder patients. Her commitment of heart and energy benefits our clients, their families and caregivers, and the community at large. Thank you, Petra, for representing what Citizens Who Care is all about!
