Q&A

What would you do to address the following issues facing the Davis Downtown area that compromise its sustainability and vibrancy:
- Awkwardness of transportation connections to and from campus cultural resources, particularly Mondavi Center events, Aggie games, etc.
- The creation of sufficient parking in quantified terms (hours/spaces/fees/locations) to promote longer, heavier use of Downtown both before and after the close of daylight business hours
- Street safety throughout the Downtown as well as the major arterial streets (e.g. across 5th Street from A through L Streets)
[Don's response:] Transportation Connections
- Shuttle from downtown to Mondavi neighborhood and stadium.
- Improvements at 1st Street and A Street intersection.
- Pleasant walking biking corridors along 1st and 3rd streets.
- Bike rentals downtown.
- Ticket sales for UCD events downtown.
Parking
- Need for workshop on downtown parking issues.
- Experiment with paid parking at E Street Plaza. Monitor costs and uses and impacts on business flow.
- Structure at 3/4/E/F.
- Reconsider overnight parking as a safety measure.
- Consider parking structure off Olive Drive south of Railroad with an elevated walk/bike crossing to the Amtrak Station
Street safety
- Reconsider the 5th Street alternative street design. Evaluate the performance of the left turn signals in addressing the overall traffic safety problems. Review all accidents that have taken place along 5th Street between A and L over the past two years. This is a very serious issue that needs attention.
- Collaborate with UCD on improvements to intersection of 1st and A Streets.
