Exhibit of Historic Photographs
to Open at The Winters Center for the Arts

The Winters Center for the Arts announces the opening of an exhibit of historic photographs documenting development of the Winters area’s fruit and nut industries in Yolo and Solano counties and the corresponding development of the city of Winters, to be hosted at the center’s gallery at 18 Main Street in Winters, CA from July 3 to August 31, 2009.

Entitled, Winters: A Taste of History, this exhibit of some 50 framed images and associated artifacts is the first to be sponsored by the Winters History Project, a collaborative volunteer effort dedicated to celebrating and preserving the area’s cultural heritage. It is curated by Joann L. Larkey, Yolo County historian and author of Winters: A Heritage of Horticulture, A Harmony of Purpose, published in 1991 by the Yolo County Historical Society.

The public is invited to attend the Opening Reception, to be held on Friday, July 3 from 6-8 P.M. A Symposium featuring UC Davis researchers at the Wolfskill Experiment Station near Winters, historians as well as local fruit, nut and grape growers is being planned for late August.

This exhibit will include a distinctive collection of historic photos from the Winters area to showcase long standing horticulture history from 1842 with John Reid Wolfskill’s first planting of fruit trees and vines on the Wolfskill families’ 17,775 acre Mexican land grant through present times.

Photos include the Wolfskill family, aftermath of the 1892 earthquake, early refrigerated train cars for transporting fruit to the east coast, multi-ethnic family contributions to horticulture, historic maps and etchings, historic downtown Main St., along with collectible fruit box labels.

Viewers of this exhibit will be transported to where horticulture began in the Sacramento Valley and remains an integral part of the legacy of historic Winters as a horticultural heritage site.
