BIOGRAPHY: Pam’s family ties are in Davis.
Pam moved to Davis 20 years ago from Albany, New York to pursue
graduate studies in plant pathology. After earning her Ph.D. in 1986, Pam
went to rural Kenya where she taught local subsistence farmers biology and
organic farming methods aimed at increasing crop yields. After returning to
Davis, Pam's post-doctoral research work involved the prevention of fungal
diseases in field crops. Pam met her husband, Tom Howard, at UC Davis
and they were married in 1987. Pam’s husband is currently deputy director
of the State Control Board. Pam and her family live in Mace Ranch and
she now devotes her time to raising her children, community service and her
work on the Davis Finance Commission and Planning Commission.
Pam’s parents have recently moved to Davis to be closer to their
grandchildren and have bought a house around the corner from her. Her
mother is a master gardener and her father is a professor of political theory.
